Gearbox Issue - 2nd gear dead
This all sounds worrying. The problem seems to be limited to ‘20 155 models (except one ‘21 model). If later cars are not affected, I assume Ford has taken steps to correct the issue. It would be interesting to know. Bearing in mind that most Puma owners will not be participating in this forum, the real size of the problem could be quite large. It’s unlikely we, as individuals, will be able to find out. It would take a combined effort of a good number of affected owners. Realistically, it would need one of the motoring publications or the AA or RAC to get involved, or Which. Perhaps none will be over-enthusiastic if Ford has already fixed the problem.
I’m having the exact same problem with my 2020 155hp st line.
The problem started just after 25k miles. I took it in to the dealership for diagnostics and they quoted £3,500+ for a new clutch and gearbox plus labour.
Of course I declined the repair as this is an absurd amount of money to fix what seems to be a manufacturing fault.
It’s crazy that this exact problem has happened to so many 2020 Pumas yet the dealership had “never seen this problem before” and state that “it could have been caused by riding the clutch” which I have never done.
This whole situation is crazy and Ford need to be held accountable.

About time Ford supported their warranty based on mileage and not age as gearboxes do not wear with age, only use.
Sounds like they use inferior parts and should have learned from the issues with the powershifts pre-2015. It would be interesting to know if they have changed the gearboxes on later models which would prove they were aware of the issue and said nothing as usual.

Hi all, sorry for the delay, COVID got in the way! Ford asked me to take my Puma to a Ford dealer and the upshot is that it is cheaper to change the gearbox completely than try to fix the issue with the second gear synchro given the labour involved especially as they don't actually know what they will find inside so that's what is going to happen and the very good news is that "as a goodwill gesture" Ford are paying 53% of the cost which leaves me with just over £1000 to pay. Seems fair to me as my car has done over 38000 miles now but given the number of cars with a similar problem it feels like there should be a recall.
At least they are prepared to make a contribution. I think i would be gathering as much info regarding other owners having the same/similar issue and go back to them with that information and see if they will contribute more of the cost. Your car doesn't look to be an isolated incident and the way i look at it is Ford are willing to pay 53% of the bill on a car that is approx 4 yrs old with 38k on it you know this isn't the first one they have come across. Wouldn't be surprised if your 1k isn't covering the whole cost since the gearbox cost to them will be a fraction of what a customer would pay.
Hopefully you get your car back quickly and no more issues.

riding the clutch would kill the clutch not 2nd gear.Nathan_tc wrote: ↑Wed Jul 17, 2024 4:33 pm I’m having the exact same problem with my 2020 155hp st line.

I don’t think it’s primarily the 155. I’ve seen quite a few with 125’s having similar issues. In fact I see an old guy at Tesco every time I pick up our order and last Friday I asked him how he liked his 70 plate Puma. It was definitely a 125. He said he loves the car, drives mostly in Eco mode but it’s the worst Ford gearbox he’s ever had…. And yes second gear was the issue.
I’d have to check FB but I’m sure I’ve seen a few ST owners with the same issue.

Seems unlikely the ST will have the same problem - it's a completely different drivetrain. (Same symptom maybe) -Stoopo wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 6:36 am I don’t think it’s primarily the 155. Doesn't inspire me to keep mine at end of PCP -

Actually, thinking back I think the ST issue was with the steering rack.matthen wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 8:00 amSeems unlikely the ST will have the same problem - it's a completely different drivetrain. As for the gearbox - just speaking with a lady on FB who has the same issue with her 125.
I’m wondering if the 155 has more problems with it due to the extra torque pressure put on it? Maybe why there seems to be more failures with the 155 by comparison? Also maybe why the new 155 and 170 are both only available in automatic now?
Ford should fess up on this and whilst not doing a recall they should at least be replacing any faulty boxes or fixing them free of charge.
Mine’s just done 26,200 and still seems fine. Luckily I took out an extra years warranty with Ford Protect Gold so I have some cover if it packs up.
I might just keep it a little longer now that I have found out the Gold cover automatically renews at the end of the year. £14 a month including full AA cover seems a decent deal - as long as they pay out!

Seems like the 2018 Fiesta had exactly the same issue! Ford must know about this!
