An odious little man. They kept the wrong one on Wheeler Dealers. It's never been the same since.

As has been pointed out above, there are various Ecoboost engines with various horsepower and in the USA some are really powerful. There were issues in its early incarnartion , but the testimony of posters on this thread who have owned it and been happy / had trouble free motoring appears to show that overall it is now a reliable and economical engine. If a motoring journalist / pundit is going to make ccomment or criticism then this needs to be specific to engine size and build date and would then have some value, not just say avoid it - would apper a wild generalisation. The Puma was What Car car of the Year 2020, surely that counts for something and wouldnt have happened if there were concerns about its engine, surely ?!

The annalogy that came to my mind regarding Mike Brewers comment on the Ecoboost engine is an international footballer being called "crap". An example of a wild generalisation. There might be an aspect of his game that could be improved, the fact that he is an international player should speak for itself and to dismiss him with the word "crap" is just meaningless. Everything, and everyone can improve, very rarely is anything or anyone perfect at what they do and it would be more helpful if those areas where the player, or the engine could improve were pointed out - that comment would then have some value.

Mike Brewer first came to my attention in a Channel 4 motoring programme in the mid to late 90's which I enjoyed. There were two presenters, and at the time I thought the other guy would have been the one to flourish. However, I do watch Mike and enjoy him.

I did look at Mike Brewer motors online a couple of years ago when first thinking about a replacement car. The prices quoted soon put a stop to that avenue, havent looked on that site for a couple of years so things may be different now.

I do hope the Ecoboost engine in the Puma turns out to be a cracker, from the information I have looked through and considered I had enough confidence to go ahead and buy one. I am so far delighted with the car and plan to get another when the PCP is up.

I love my little ecoboost in my fiesta,100bhp is no firecracker but adequate,im just trying to decide non hybrid or hybrid at the moment,I have had the fiesta for 2 years and heading into its 3rd year with no probs, how can mr brewer say avoid this engine and to say its crap is crazy to say the least,as regarding his program edd china is an absolute legend I always got the impression that mr brewer lived on the back of edd,who kmows?

Had a 2017 B Max 1.0 123 bhp for 4.5 years and did 40k miles in it with no issues. Over 46 mpg over the vehicle life. Liked the engine so much, I went for the Puma with the same power unit with mild hybrid (KERS to me). Getting 55 mpg from it according to the Ford Pass fuel report (which is 4 mpg higher than the car is tellibg me). Loving the Puma so far, though am beginning to wish I had gone for the 155 power unit rather than the 125 as it's a fair bit heavier than the B Max.

Early eco boosts did have an issue with the degus pipe which could result in terminal engine failure and the powershift train also had a lot of issues. Ford seem to have sorted both out on more recent vehicles.

Can't fault either of my ecoboosts so far. I love the high mpg and having the extra power to use when I need (or want) it. Would definitely recommend this engine.
