Rubber car mats from Halfords… not had them for years until I drove a Corsa hire car with rubber mats and realised that I prefer them so have ordered myself a set for the Puma (the mega box would have been be perfect for the large 10 disc cd changer in the boot!)

denty1964, the Triumph Herald was best for engine bay access. Th whole front of the body, including the wings lifted up and to the front.

I remember when you could work on your car with more space around the engine than what the engine actually took.
Good Times.....
Yes...... WW1 :D

There was more space around the engine in those days and they were much easier to work on. Cambelts were a doddle, just slip the old one off the pulleys and pop the new one on. I also had a Mk2 Vauxhall Cavalier which was a joy to work on. You could pop it on a ramp, drop the sump and replace the big ends and the main bearings in situ. Its big trick though was that you could replace the clutch without removing the gearbox. You withdrew the input shaft from the end of the gearbox (via LH wheel well), removed the cover plate at the bottom of the gearbox and swapped the clutch assy over. It literally was a 20 minute job.

Having said all that, the engines of those days were less reliable. Carbs, points, condensers, distributers etc. 3000 mile oil changes. Exhausts that needed replacing every 2-3 years. I've not had to replace an exhaust for 20 years and I put 175k miles on my Focus Mk2 TDCI and sold it on with the original clutch and exhaust.

I used to love working on cars when I was younger. Now I'm older and don't want to be working under a car..... I don't have to. Win/win really

I bought a set of the Ford rubber mats for the front of the Puma... just for winter use. They are really good. Not sure I want to go back to a multi CD disc changer though. My phone is much smaller and holds more music ;)
