I’m sure I read somewhere (possibly in the manual) not to try pushing or pulling the hands free tailgate or else risk damaging the the mechanism.

That’s when the tailgate is already in motion

I’ll let someone else test that theory before I do 😆

You can manually adjust the height it’s open so you can then store that as the default height

It's not theory, I had to alter the height of mine when I got it. Followed instructions in the handbook. You can set it to any height you want.

I guess there’s a part of me that thinks it odd to push against a motorised mechanism, even if not moving. I recall skim reading that section thinking I’d come back to it if needed for more in-depth detail, as I struggled to see the benefit of setting the opening height unless you park somewhere with restricted height all the time or we’re worried it would suddenly stop working and you weren’t tall enough to reach up and close manually.

The idea is that you can set the height for restricted spaces (some garages) or for the vertically challenged.
When I got mine I complained for a couple of weeks that the tailgate was too low and I kept banging my head on it. I thought it was a design error, when I learned how to set it the problem went away.
You don't actually feel that you are pushing against any motors and there is definitely no adverse effects in doing it.

You'd think it was fuse protected and that would pop before you did any damage.

I've had to grab mine in the past when I'd parked close to the tree out front, absent mindedly throwing my work gear in the boot at 1am all bleary eyed. 😳

As I park mine in my garage I just press the switch to stop it raising anymore and hitting the door
