The government only thinks of themselves and how they can benefit. I think for our PM to accept gifts of circa Β£100k speaks for itself. They need to be targeting the businesses who make money here but pay little or avoid tax.

There is no proof of what the black hole consists of and for all we know could be a con to provide funds for other things we don't need.

Are we also going to be hit with a 2p per mile motoring charge. The present fuel duty already bears down more heavily on those who drive the most miles, or have the least fuel efficient cars. I wonder if a price per mile tax will be a flat rate for all vehicles?

How will they introduce a price per mile tax. New cars are not subject to an MOT so can't be done annually. It's only newish cars which have telematics modules so older cars won't provide any data.

The government need to leave the motorist alone. We already give them 12% of our insurance premiums. How did that come about. What's next, mobile phone tax, satellite dish or broadband tax. The best thing the government can do with this black hole they have found is for all of them to hold hands and jump in it.

They're busy digging it themselves.

Whatever the government does, people will always do whatever they can to avoid a new tax. I am reluctant to change my 2023 Puma for a new one which has the auto speed control software, even though I am pretty good at observing speed limits. So far as a drive per mile tax is concerned, I am not clear how it can be calculated and enforced on older cars. There are always consequences to a new tax which the government has not thought about, no matter how obvious they might seem. For example, look at at all those bricked up windows in older houses; an obvious reaction to the introduction of the window tax in the tripod Queen Ann.
It would be more acceptable if any tax were to be designed to limit unacceptable behaviour. If driving a lot is unacceptable, then tax according to perceived evil. Charge by mileage if necessary, but in that case abolish the road fund licence and fuel duty, so that we can all see what we are paying for.

In the tripod Queen Ann should read in the reign of Queen Ann. This interpretive text is not as it should be !!!

If any of those bricked up windows are in houses which are grade 2 listed you will be glad they are bricked up. No replacing expensive wooden sash windows with cheap uPVC πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.
