The TCU needs to replaced. My service manager said categorically that there is in inerrant fault and they all will need removing and returned for reprogramming at the factory.

I got the ecall failure warning that's why the TCU was updated, unfortunately not successfully it seems.
I'm not sure what you are on about. You said your E-call light was permanently dim and as you pointed out, the manual states that it should be dim when functioning correctly.
It doesn't glow bright red on start up. But the reason the dealer got involved was the onscreen malfunction warning advising me to seek dealer advice. The warning light was still showing bright then dim red before the TCU software update. Also the Ford Pass app no longer connects to the car since the update.
