Does braking really charge the 48v battery?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, i searched but couldn't find a topic of this.

So in the manual it says braking charges the 48v battery. But if you add the hybrid gauge screen, you can see it only charges when you slowdown by downshifting. Braking does not generate energy according to the screen.

So do you always need to slowdown in gear to generate energy?

Yes breaking or coasting 'in gear' will regen your 48v battery. Clutch dipped breaking or coasting in neutral will not, think of it as engine connected to wheels at all times when slowing.
