Hi everyone!
I bought a Ford Puma Titanium from 2021 in October this year with just over 20k kms on the clock.
I have a question regarding the electric motor acceleration. When it kicks in you see the blue symbol on the dashboard.
I have been noticing that whenever I am at a traffic light and I have to accelerate from zero, the electric motor will not kick in. It will only start assisting as soon as i’m above 30/40 km/h (and still accelerating). Also on highways the electric motor will support accelerations
So my question is, shouldnt the electric motor kick in when driving away from zero, or is it normal the way it is acting now?
Many thanks!
Puma Titanium electric acceleration
My experience from only driving a few months with my 2020 st-line x mhev m6 compared to your case, is that it doesn't sound like any failure but perfectly normal.
It isn't really like an electric motor, it's more of an electric assist to the BISG starter generator from the 48V battery to supply the engine with a small max 20Nm torqueboost. While checking how it behaves in my car i don't really see any boost with the blue turbine symbol unless situations where i want a small extra boost with the acceleration around 3k rpm by pressing the gas pedal a little extra. Normal calm acceleration won't "trigger" it. Then i also see minor adjustments using them occasionally with the cruise control on. regeneration with the AA-battery symbol appears on when you let go of the gas and use a mild "engine brake" like slowing down slightly to a turn or coasting. It's really a mini-system that is there but doesn't need any extra attention really. Just gives those acceleration baby-pushes to make it feel more fun to drive. So gear, speed, rpm doesn't really trigger it that way, more like when you press the gas a bit more it gives that boost to help.
One way i can think of, to describe it, would be to say :
"it's a cute little gasoline car that thinks it's a turbodiesel but the lag of the turbo (mhev) is the moment it has to think whether or not it is one and then says YES".

If you are just pulling away normally, the motor does not kick in, neither does it function under normal acceleration. And, in stop start traffic, if it operated every time you pulled away, you would soon loose battery charge
So, working perfectly fine.
So, working perfectly fine.

Ok many thanks! I was curious as accelersting from 0 uses the most gasoline, so i’d expected that the mhev shoild kick in.
But think this indeed describes exactly my Puma behaviour, i like the line
“the lag of the turbo (mhev) is the moment it has to think whether or not it is one and then says YES".
