maybe in reverse because generally the clutch isn't fully engaged when using it to manoeuvre unless reversing more than a few feet

I'm guessing they could be corroded? which is more likely than worn.
or as you say Ford are trying one on.

I probably wouldn’t go to Ford for the pads/ discs , I had mine done under warranty and they would have been 460.00
See if you can find a good independent or haggle a bit with Ford whilst it is in for its service .
